A seismic structural topology evolutionary optimal design method was developed. The explicit dynamic analysis method was adopted to calculate total equivalent plastic strain of the structural element in the whole earthquake action. The structural elements were defined as efficient elements and inefficient elements according to the threshold of the element total equivalent plastic strain based on the principle that the more total equivalent plastic strain of the element is accumulated in the earthquake action, the more the element wastes the earthquake energy. So the efficient elements contribute to better the seismic-resistance capability of structures. The inefficient elements in the design domain were deleted gradually in the topology optimization course and the seismic structure became more and more optimal. When the total delete ratio was great or equaled to the prescriptive delete ratio, the structure converged to the optimum topology and the topology optimal design of the seismic structure was completed. The example indicates that the optimum topology obtained by using the seismic structural topology evolutionary optimal design method has the characteristics of engineering structures. It can present a structural concept design and type choice method for the structure engineers.
