Objective : To explore the effects of reduced glutathione on the level of SOD and MDA in the brain of neonatal rat after hypoxic - ischemia brain damage. Methods : 40 seven - day - old postnatal rats Were divided into sham operation group, hypoxic - is- chemic group, reduced glutathione group and vitamin C group randomly. A hypoxic - ischemic (HI) insult was produced as previous reports. Reduced glutathione (400mg/kg) and vitamin C (300mg/kg) were administered intraperitoneally after HI insult, respective- ly. The level of SOD and MDA in brain homogenate was measured after animals were sacrificed at set time. Results: Compared with sham operation group, the level of SOD in hypoxic - ischemic group was significantly decreased ( P 〈 0. 01 ), but the content of MDA was increased significantly ( P 〈 0.01 ) . The level of SOD was significantly enhanced ( P 〈 0.01 ) in reduced glutathione group compared to hypoxic- ischemic group, but the content of MDA was reclined significantly ( P 〈0. 01 ) . Conclusion: Reduced gluta- thione could protective the brain of neonatal rat after hypoxic -- ischemic brain damage by increasing the actiyity of SOD and decreasing the content of MDA.
