To examine the expression of β-catenin in breast cancer and its correlation with the apoptosis. The expression of β-catenin, survivin in 45 cases of breast cancer was by using high sensitive SP immunohistochemical method. The apoptosis of breast carcinoma ceils was detected by TUNEL assay. The abnormal expression rates of β-catenin, survivin were 68.9% ( 31/45 ), 73.3% ( 33/45 ) respectively. The apoptosis rate of cells ( 7.28 ± 1.86) % in cases with abnormal expression of β-catenin was significantly less than in normal cases (9. 89 ± 2. 58)%. 42. 9% (6/14) of the cases with normal staining of β-catenin showed positive expression of survivin, while 87.1% (27/31)of the cases showed positive expression of survivin with abnormal staining. Abnormal expression of β-catenin and positive expression of survivin showed a significantly positive correlation (rs= 0. 463, P 〈 0. 01 ).β-catenin accumulation in cytoplasm/nuclear may inhibit the apoptosis of the breast carcinoma cells by triggering survivin expression.
