Objective: To investigate the expression and distribution of somatostatin in the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract during early human embryonic development. Methods: Sample collection was conducted in accordance with the principle of informed consent. Histochemical S-ABC method was adopted to study the expression and localization of somatostatin in embryos at 7-14 weeks after gestation. Results: No somatostatin-positive cells were found in the pancreatic epithelium and gastrointestinal tract epithelium at embryonic week 7. At 9 weeks, a few somatostatin-positive cells were observed on the pan creatic epithelium and the number of somatostatin-positive cells increased and aggregated to form pancreatic islets at 14 weeks after gestation. Eleven weeks after gestation, there were a few somatostatin-positive cells on the mucosa epithelium and lamina propria in the small intestines and increased 14 weeks after gestation. Conclusion: The expression of somatostatin in the pancreatic epithelium priors to gastrointestinal tract epithelium in the early human embryonic development. Somatostatin is not only related to pancreatic islet cells differentiation but also to forming the endocrine function of the gastrointestinal tract.
