Combustion and pyrolysis of anaerobic digested sewage sludge and undigested sewage sludge was investigated under air and nitrogen atmospheres by thermogravimetric -mass spectrometry (TG-MS). The results showed that the combustion and pyrolysis processes could be divided into three stages: volatilization of water, decomposition of organic substances and decomposition of inorganic substances. At temperatures from 300℃ to 350℃, the decomposition of organic substances of the undigested sludge is more significant than that of the anaerobic digested sludge during both combustion and pyrolysis processes. During the decomposition of inorganic substances, the main decomposed substances for anaerobic digested sludge are carbonates while for undigested sludge they are sulfates. The gaseous products under different conditions were analyzed by coupled simultaneous mass spectrometry. The results showed that a large amount of H2O and CO2 were released during the pyrolysis and combustion processes. During pyrolysis, H2 , CH4, C2H6, C4H10 and CTH8 were detected. The amount of the organic gases emitted from the anaerobic digested sludge was smaller than that from undigested sludge.
