Interactions between the immune system and the reproductive system are important for maintaining female fertility and reproductive health in general. There is increasing evidence that the Toll-like receptors (TLRs), which belong to conservative receptor family in evolution, are involved in this process. While there is no doubt that TLRs are important in providing protection against infections of the reproductive tract, there is increasing evidence for the involvement of TLRs in more basic pathology and physiology of reproduction. For example, TLRs have been implicated in critical aspects of ovarian, endometrial and placental function, as well as in common gynecological diseases. This review summarizes the current information available about the role of TLRs in reproductive physiology and pathology.
