Objective To study the effects of cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases on the memory in retired cadres. Methods The diagnostic criteria of WHO and the academic conference of the second Chinese Medical Association were applied to the diagnoses of hypertensive disease and cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases, while secondary hypertension and other cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases were obviated by clinical and laboratory examinations. A total of 751 retired cadre patients with cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases were allocated into trial group, and another 125 healthy volunteers were allocated into control group. The patients whose diseases were clear were inspected via measuring scale of clinical remembrance. Primitive scores were converted into the scores of measuring scale, from which the memory quotients (MQ) were obtained. Results There was significant lowering in the five items [ directional memory (direction) , associational learning (association), free recall of figure (figure), recognition of nonsense graph (graph), recall of portrait feature], as well as in MQ when compared with that of the control group (P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion The decline of memory is relevant to the cardiac and cerebrovascular disease in the elderly.
