To compare combustibility differences of woody plants and provide theory basis for the correct developing biological fire-prevention, combustion experimentations of living branches and leaves of 4 types of bayberry species and 2 types contrastive combustible species were tested with an experimental equipment designed by the authors. The combustion characteristic parameters, namely the ratio between area of smoke temperature net rising curves apices per unit mass fuel in flaming stage and ignition time, were put forward based on lighting time, smoking temperature and weight losing in flaming stage. The relative orders of combustibility from weak to strong points were.Myrica nana Cheval, Myrica esculenta Buch. -Ham,Myrica rubra var. atropurpurea Tsen,Myrica rubra var. typica Tsen. and Myrica rubra var. typica Tsen could be used as biological fire-prevention species because of the excellent economic value of its fruit and its poor combustible quality of its living branches and leaves. Myrica rubra var. typica Tsen may be chosen as primary fire prevention species in building non-timber product forest fire prevention greenbelt in Kunming area.
