Objective To compare the efficacy of acupuncture at point Taixi(KI3) with scalp acupuncture in treating dysphagia due to post-stroke pseudobulbar palsy. Methods One hundred patients were randomly allocated to treatment and control groups, 50 cases each. The treatment group received point Taixi acupuncture as the main plus basic acupuncture treatment for hemiplegia and the control group, point-through-point acupuncture from scalp anterior parietotemporal oblique line to posterior parietotemporal oblique line as the main plus basic acupuncture treatment for hemiplegia. The clinical therapeutic effects were compared betweenthe two groups after 3, 5 and 10 sessions of acupuncture. Results There was a statistically significant difference in the global therapeutic effect between the treatment and control groups. The therapeutic effect was better in the treatment group than in the control group at the end of 3 treatments, but there was no statistically significant difference in therapeutic effect between the two groups at the end of 5 treatments. Conclusion Acupuncture at point Taixi has a marked and quicker therapeutic effect on dysphagia due to poststroke pseudobulbar palsy. Scalp acupuncture treatment has a more marked accumulative effect.
