Objective: To explore the effects of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating on brain tissue response to implanted electrodes by studying the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Methods: Twenty-two Wistar rats were implanted respectively silica gel electrodes (as controls) and PVA coating electrodes in left and right cerebral cortex respectively for self control. The tissue reactivity was observed by HE staining after 4 and 8 weeks, and the expression of GFAP was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Results: After 4 weeks, there were significant differences in GFAP expression between the two groups at the brain area of 50-100 μm and of 〉 100 μm far from the implanting point (PVA〈controls, P〈0.05). After 8 weeks, the expression of GFAP in the SG electrodes was significantly higher than that of the PVA coating group at the 0-50 μm, 50-100 μm, and 〉100 μm area(P〈0.05). In addition, the expression of GFAP after 4 weeks was significantly higher than that after 8 weeks at 50-100 μm and 〉100 μ(P〈0.05) respectively in both groups. Conclusion: PVA coating can decrease the expression of GFAP and may improve the biocompatibility.
