摘　　要：汤姆诙谐句是英语中一类特殊的双关短句,在幽默和语言学研究领域都是理想的题材。本文首先阐述了汤姆诙谐句的定义和背景,并以大量的实例阐明了汤姆诙谐句的结构特点和意义构成基础,并在典型汤姆诙谐句的基础上讨论了几种变体。目前,研究的重点是对汤姆诙谐句的形式描写,基于VINCI的计算机建模方案可操作性强,但适用范围较小,因此,本人又提出了汤姆诙谐句的简化形式方案,以弥补其不足。As a special type of pun in English, Tom Swifties constitute an ideal subject matter in linguistics and humor studies. Drawing on an abundance of examples, this introductory paper deals with the definition and source of Tom Swiftics before expounding their meaning-based structural characteristics and the variants of typical Tom Swifties. The current academic interest is in the formalization of Tom Swifties. As the VINCI-based computer model has its limitations, a simplified formal approach is developed in the paper.
