Objective To evaluate the effect of the action research method in foot health behavior intervention for diabetic patients. Methods Eighty one diabetic patients in 3 communities of Shanghai were randomly divided into a control group (42 cases) and an in- tervention group (39 cases). The control group were given conventional foot health education guidance, intervention group were given foot care health behavior interventions, including steps of problem determinination and assessment, planning, action, obser- vation, reflexion, revision of the plan and implementation. After three cycles of the steps, the podiatrists knowledge, self-efficacy and self-care ability of the 2 groups were evaluated. Results The self-efficacy, self-care of the intervention group were significantly better than those of the control group (P^0.01 for all). In the control group, there were three cases of foot ulcers, of which 1 case had to cutoff the affected toe, while the intervention group didn't develop foot ulcers. Conclusion Action research method ap- plied in foot health interventions for diabetic patients can improve their self-efficacy and self-care ability, and effectively control and reduce the occurrence of diabetic foot.
