Objective To understand the phagocyte types and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns of Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi A isolates from Paratyphoid fever A epidemic area, and confirm the links between the phagocyte types and PFGE patterns as well as the distribution and prevalence of the isolates. Method A total of 121 isolates were studied using Salmonella combined phagocytes and PFGE analysis following digestion of chromosomal DNA with SpeI and XbaI. Result There were 4 complete phagocyte types or 1 phagocyte type among the 121 isolates. The SpeI and XbaI digestions of the 121 isolates gave five or four different PFGE patterns in which the SpeI01 and SpeI02 ( or XbaI01 ) epidemic patterns were predominant respectively. SpeI01 and SpeI02 accounted for 37. 2% (45/121) and 57. 9% (70/121) of the isolates, respectively,or XbaI01 accounted for 95.1% ( 115/121 ) of the isolates. Conclusion No links were observed between the phagocyte types and PFGE patterns. PFGE patterns SpeI01 and SpeI02 (or XbaI01 ), the main clones of the epidemics, are highly prevalent in Yuxi. PFGE with SpeI and XbaI is a useful technique to differentiate SPA from different geographical regions, and can be useful for epidemiological routine investigation of PA.
