A CORPUS-BASED STUDY OF"RELATION"AND"RELATIONSHIP"IN ADVANCED LEARNER'S DICTIONARIES

摘　　要：The synonyms'relation'and'relationship'are very confusing for English learners,and this paper deliberately chooses this pair of synonyms as the investigatory case.The investigating scope covers four dictionaries for advanced learners in non-native English speaking countries.They are Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (4th edition,1989) (OALIM),Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (6th edition) (OALD6, 2000),Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (3rd edition,1995) (LDCE3),and Collins Cobuild English Dictionary (2nd edition,1995) (CCED2).In this paper,the author first makes a comparative study of this pair of synonyms in the four dictionaries.The focus is fixed upon four aspects,namely,the numbers of word entries and sense items,countability,collocations,and usage notes.Then,with the help of the evidences from Lancaster-Oslo-Bergen Corpus (LOB) and Freiburg-LOB Corpus of British English (FLOB),the author delves into these four aspects and evaluates their treatment in the four dictionaries.It is found out that dictionaries based on corpora reflect better the actual use of language and provide more accurate and useful information for learners.本文特意选择一组常常使英语学习者产生迷惑的同义词relation和relationship作为研究对象。研究涉及牛津、柯林斯、朗文高级英语学习者词典。作者首先对比了词典中在词条和义项数目、可数性、搭配和用法注解这几个方面的处理情况,然后根据来自LOB和FLOB语料库中的例证对这几个方面进行了深入研究。结果证明,基于语料库编纂的词典能更好地反映语言的实际使用情况,能给学习者提供更准确、更有用的信息。
