This paper intends to analyze the narrative techniques in Something Happened with postmodern narrative theories so as to demonstrate the indeterminacy of the text. The analysis proves that in deconstructing the traditional conception of meaning Heller expressed his idea of the indeterminacy of meaning. In the novel, the traditional authority of first-person narration is deconstructed by itself, accompanied with struggles of different voices; the interaction between the narrating time and the narrated time influences the narrator' s personality as well as his attitude towards the events, in the process of which meaning is constantly created and deconstructed, and therefore becomes unstable and indeterminable.
