The Yao people living in Pulu Township, Lipu County, Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are all Pan Yao, or Guoshan (literally meaning crossing mountains in Chinese) Yao, which is part of the Yao Minority. Currently, there are more than 4,300 Pan Yao people living in the township. They account for 40 percent of the township's population. Their language belongs to the Yao language of the Sino-Tibetan Miaoyao language group. In ancient times, the Yao people suffered indignities because they were members of a minority group. For example, they were forbidden from living on the plains. As a result, they had to dwell on the high mountains or deep in the valleys, which forced them to live primitive, insufficient lives. The Yao people were also exploited by local landowners, so they were constantly on the move, zipping across the mountains. Thus, they acquired the name Guoshan Yao (the Yaos who make a living by crossing mountains). Today, these people live a peaceful, happy and settled life.
