Huzhou in Zhejiang Province boasts a long history of sericulture. The carbonized silk slips excavated at a Neolithic site in the suburb of Huzhou date back to as far as 4, 700 years ago. The archaeological proof supports the saying that ' Huzhou silk is found everywhere' in ancient time.Historically speaking, the local people have long since lived on sericulture, which has bred folklore and special celebrations linked to the industry. When the Pure Brightness Festival (which falls on April 5th, by the lunar calendar) comes, the silkworm eggs start to hatch. Kids put on new clothes, adults carry bags full of Zongzi ( glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), silkworm egg paper and dusters. People flock to Mount Hanshan on foot, by boat or by bike. Usually, participants will buy a bouquet of silkworm flower-made of thin silk - likepaper. It is a big event for silkworm farmers. They slid the flowers in their breast pockets, clip them on their hats, or insert them on the sugar canes they hold in the hands. Women put flowers on their hair. All pilgrims hike to a temple on the top of Mount Henshan. They pay their homage to the Lady Silkworm. After their annual visit to the temple, farmers begin to climb up the pagoda which towers more than 30 meters. Farmers regard this ascent as part of their luck - seeking activities because ascending the pagoda is analogous to one s endeavor for mor
