Before I set my eyes on the legendary Indians living on another continent, I thought of them just as another people. When I saw them, I immediately felt an affinity existing between them and me.I ran into Indians by chance on July 4, 1992 when the library of California University at Los Angles was closed for the Independence Day and I decided to spend the day doing some sightseeing around the city. What I have read and seen has made me believe these Indians are really our cousins.High totem columns are seen in places where Indians live. I saw various kinds of Indian totems across America. Some totems are engraved with magnificent patterns and garishly colored while some are very simple and plain. At first sight, these totem pillars gave me deep fascination, but a closer look made me think they were very similar to the Chinese Huabiao (such ornamental columns can be seen in the Tian ' anmen Square, Beijing). Though upright and towering, a Huabiao is made of stone and usually decorated with dragons and clouds, while an Indian totem column, made of wood, is sculptured with human heads a
