Objective To explore the effect of Sertraline hydrochloride for depression in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Methods 48 patients with cardiovascular diseases and major depreesive disorder entered an 8-week randomized control trial. Patients of experimental group were given daily doses of Sertraline hydrochloride (up to 100mg/d). The beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) were used to measure the severity of depression and to detemine the percentage of patients who achived substantial improvement or complete remission. Results The depreesive symptoms of experimental group were much lighter than those of the control (P〈0. 05 or P〈0. 01). The effectiveness rate of experimental group were much higher than that of the control (62.5%, 33.3%, P〈0. 05) according to BDI and the cure rate of experimental group were higher than that of the control (45.8%, 25.0%, P〈0. 05) according to HAMD. The symptoms related to cardiovascular diseases of experimental group markedly improved compared with the control. Conclusion Doctors should pay attention to the prevalence of depression in patients with cardiovascular diseases. There is an apparently therapeutic effect after administering Sertraline hydrochloride.
