Objective To explore the change of serum electrolyte concentrations in the children with vasovagal syncope ( VVS ) at baseline. Methods 79 children with unexplained syncope and prodromata [ 31 male, 48 female, mean ( 11.18± 2.47 ) years old ] were included in the study and 11 healthy children [ 5 male, 6 female, mean (9.59 ± 2.47 ) years old ] were matched as controls. Serum electrolyte concentrations ( sodium, potassium, chlorine, calcium, phosphonium, magnesium) were detected by HITACHI 7600 -020 automatic biochemistry analyzer at baseline. Results Compared with control group, serum potassium was significantly lower and serum calcium higher in syncope group ( P 〈 0.05 ) , serum sodium slightly decreased ( P 〉 0. 05 ). There was no significant difference in serum electrolyte concentrations between HUTT response result and syncope frequency ( P 〉 0.05 ). Conclusion The changes of serum electrolyte concentrations may play a role in the pathophysiology of VVS, so it is important to think highly of the change of serum electrolyte concentrations during diagnosis and treatment of VVS.
