Locating Orlando within a matrix of biographical, cultural, and literary concerns, this essay seeks to present a parallel comparison between the stories in Orlando and the real experiences of Vita Sackville-West in the time and space context of Virginia Woolf' s composing the comedic, peculiar and fantastical "biogra- phy" of Vita Sackville-West. This essay gives a detailed analysis of the concealed double compensation in Orlando. Firstly, the text restores lost loves and lost objects to both Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf; secondly, Orlando presents not only Sackville-West' s "biography", but also Woolf' s own story of the inadequa- cy of language to represent things. By understanding the tensions between the real and the fantastic, and the public and private, the text shows a true passion of Virginia Woolf to Vita Sackville-West.
