摘　　要：塞缪尔.巴特勒是19世纪英国优秀小说家之一。《众生之路》是其代表作,但国内学界对这一作品研究甚少。巴特勒通过对主人公欧内斯特这一形象的刻画,表达了对人类道德进化的关注。《众生之路》讲述的与其说是主人公欧内斯特的成长经历,不如说是他实现自我的自由之路,完成道德进化的精神之旅。文章从进化伦理学的角度出发,通过对小说人物的分析,探讨了作品中自由和道德进化的关系以及背后所蕴含的深刻社会意义。Samuel Butler is one of the most outstanding novelists in the 19^th century. The Way of All Flesh regarded as his masterpiece; however, it draws few attentions in China. Butler concerns moral evolution of human through the depiction of Ernest. The Way of All Flesh narrates much more about Ernest＇s road to freedom of self-realization and spiritual journey of moral evolution than his growth experience. This thesis, dealing with the perspective of evolutionary ethics, analyzes the main character, explores a crucial theme of the relation between freedom and moral evolution, even the profound social significance implied in it.
