Objectives To study weather the antiseptic-coated catheter (ACC) reduces the chance of intravascular catheter-related infections in patients in intensive care unit (ICU). Methods 408 patients treated in ICU who needed intravascular catheterization were randomly divided into 2 age, APACHE Ⅱ score, insertion site, and mean duration of catheterization-matched groups to receive ACC (n=211) or standard non-coated catheter (NCC) (n=197). The incidence of central vein catheter (CVC)-related infection was observed. Results The CVC-related infection rate of the ACC group was 7.6% (16/211), significantly lower than that of the NCC group (11.2%, 22/197, P〈0.05). The incidence of non-bacteremic type CVC-related infection of the ACC group was 10.0% (21/211), significantly lower than that of the NCC group (16.2%, 32/197, P〈0.05). Conclusion ACC helps reduce the chance of infection in the patient in ICU.
