The distribution of Sonneratia extends from East Africa to Indo-Malesia, northern Australia, New Guinea and the Western Pacific, and the Sonneratia vegetation comprises the main communities of coastal mangrove forests. This paper presents pollen morphological results based on LM and SEM observations for six species of the genus. Pollen wall debris obtained by the MP FastPrepl20 were observed using SEM in order to examine the exine stratification. Four pollen types of the Sonneratia species can be grouped, namely A type(Sonneratia alba, S. × hainanensis, S. ×gulngai), B type ( S. ovata ), C type ( S. caseolaris) and D type (S. apetala). Pollen keys are established based on their morphological characteristics. Pollen morphological study on extant Sonneratia contributes our understanding of the evolution of mangrove paleobotany and paleoecosytem changes, which expands the mangrove paleoecological study field. Pollen morphological investigations of the extant Sonneratia plants provide useful information, which are important keys to the identification of fossil pollen grains of the same genus or related taxa. The significance of extant Sonneratia pollen on fossil pollen identification and paleeological study is also discussed.
