Objective To study the effects of sodium para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS-Na) on hippocampal ultramicro-structure of subchronic lead-exposed rats. Methods Male rats were intraperitoneally given lead acetate (6 mg/kg) daily for 5 weeks (5 days· week). And then, rats were treated with PAS-Na at 100 or 200 mg/kg by subcutaneous injection in the back for 21 days. The contents of lead in rat blood were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, and the alterations of ultramicro-structure in hippocampal granular layer of rats were observed by transmission electron microscope. Results The increased contents of lead in blood and the pathological changes of hippocampal uhramicro-structure in the lead-exposed rats were observed. The ultramicro-structures of axon and cytodendrite in hippocampus of the lead-exposed rat treated with PAS-Na(200 mg/kg) were nearly returned to normal level, the structures in layers of medullary sheath were more compact, the levels of derangement and interruption in neurofibril were alleviated, the structures of synapse were more clear than those of lead-exposed rat. Conclusion PAS-Na could be an antagonism on the injured neurons in bippocampus of rats induced by lead.
