This essay approaches Amy Tan's novel The Kitchen God's Wife from the perspective of motherdaughter relationship. It reveals how the dominant discourse of motherhood marginalizes the mothering experiences of a Chinese American mother, and severs the ties between mother and daughter. To reconnect the tie necessitates the effective communication between mother and daughter. Through mother's narrative, a mother with a past is revealed, hence is returned her voice and subjectivity. Meanwhile, a daughter's serf - consciousness in a multicultural context is rendered fuller by her ability to narrate and to listen to the mother's narrative.
