Objective To investigate the relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the onset of psoriasis. Methods (1)The intensity and site expression of VEGF in 35 psoriatic lesions, non-lesion skin and the skin of 10 normal controls were observed by immuno histochemistory. (2)The serum levels of VEGF in 25 psoriasis vulgaris and 15 normal controls were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results (1) VEGF were prominently expressed by epidermal keratinocytes and superficial dermal vascular endothelium or perivascular inflammation cells within psoriatic lesions, and rare immanoreactive cells were present within nonlesional skin, whereas almost none expression in normal controls. The expression of psoriatic lesions is much higher than that in normal controls, the dyeing level is more than + + of over 20 patients. It has statistical significance (P〈0.05). There is no statistical significance (P〉0.05)between non-lesion skin and the skin of normal controls.(2)The serum level of VEGF in stability psoriatic patients is higher than in normal controls. It has statistical significance(P〈O.05). Conclusion VEGF might play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
