Objective:To study the influence of mastication on the cerebral blood flow through the control research of changes of cerebral blood flow before and after mastication in aged and young. Method: The systolic peak flow, diastolic terminal peak flow and average peak flow in cerebral middle artery were measured with the use of Transcranial Doppler ultrasonic diagnostic instrument. Result: The systolic peak flow, diastolic peak flow and average peak flow had increased after masticated 5 minutes and 10 minutes (P〈0.05). In every period, the average diastolic peak flow in aged group was lower than that in young group. The averaged systolic peak flow and the average peak flow were no signicantly difference between two groups. Conclusion: This suggests that normal masticatory function could relieve the effect of age on cerebral blood flow and the intergrity of the dentition should be preserved and restored as far as possible.
