Objective To investigate the relationship of pathology and HIV infection in gastric mucosal tissues from the patients with AIDS. Methods Twenty-five patients in AIDS stage of HIV-infected patients were enrolled. The labeled HIV-1 double-stranded cDNA probe was a PCR product corresponding to the LTR and gag gene of the HIV-1 genome. In situ hybridization (ISH) test was used to detect HIV in gastric mueosal tissues of AIDS patients. Results It showed chronic superficial gastritis (CSG) and chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) in gastric mucosal pathology of AIDS patients. HIV gene sequence mainly located gastric mucosal mononuclear cell (MMC) , other cells also were observed with HIV expression including mucosal epithelial cells, gland epithelial cells and interstitial cells. There was no difference between HIV expression in the CSG and CAG (P 〉 0.05). Conclusion The connection of the AIDS process and pathology in gastric mucosal tissues is possible, but HIV infection may not produce a marked effect.
