20~30×1012W/m2。Fifteen rare-earth (RE) elements with 1. 5 mol% concentration are doped into CaOSiO2- B2 O3-Al2 O3-Na2O borosilicate glasses, respectively, to form RE doped borosilicate glasses, and their 532 nm nanosecond laser protection properties are studied through three kinds of experiments. By recording their transmission spectra,we can find that only three spectra of Nd-, Er-and Ho-doped glasses (called type I glasses) have remarkable absorptive structure in the vicinity of 532 nm,and therefore we anticipate that type Ⅰ glasses may possess larger third order optical nonlinear absorption coefficient than the other twelve kinds of RE doped borosilicate glasses (called type Ⅱ glasses). The open-aperture Z-scan experiments confirm the above-mentioned anticipation and show that the largest nonlinear absorption co- efficient is that of Nd^3+ doped glass, fix 6.55 × 10^11 m/W. Optical limiting experiments further deter- mine that type I glasses can exhibit the laser protection property below the power density 20 × 10^12 W/ m^2 and type II glasses may play the optical limiting role at power densities more than 20 × 10^12 W/m^2 but below 30×10^12 W/m^2.
