摘　　要：1883年的上海金融危机是中国历史上最具影响的危机之一,刚刚向近代化起步的中国经济受到了前所未有的重创。在这场危机中,尽管徐润、胡雪岩同样破产,但是他们在本质上是不同的。徐润是"限于时",是时代的大背景使然,是任何个人都避免不了的;而胡雪岩的破产则是"囿于势",具有被时代淘汰的意味。The economic crisis of 1883 in Shanghai was one of the most influential crises in Chinese history. In the crisis, Chinese economyjust on the way to modernization suffered unprecedented heavy losses. Though Xu Run and Hu Xueyan both went bankrupt, yet they were different in nature. Xu Run＇ s bankruptcy was restricted by the phase, the background of the society, which could not be avoided. How-ever, Hu Xue- yan＇s failure was caused by the trend. In a sense, he was eliminated by the times.
