Objective: To evaluate the effects of anthropometric indices including height, weight and body mass index (BMI) on bone mineral density (BMD) in lumbar vertebrea, femur neck, intertrochanter and trochanter in healthy women in Nanchang region. Methods: The BMD in lumbar vertebrea, femur neck, intertrochanter and trochanter of 373 healthy females aged 20-25 years was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry ( DEXA). The results were analyzed with SAS software. Results: Weight, height and BMI were significantly positive correlated with the BMD in lumbar vertebrea, femur neck, intertrochanter and trochanter(P 〈 0. 0001 ). The coefficients between weight and BMD were the highest(0. 241 - 0. 382), those between BMI and BMD were intermediate(0. 171-0. 320), and those between height and BMD were the lowest(0. 144 -0. 189). Among these anthropometric indices, only weight is the significant factor affecting BMD in lumbar vertebrea, femur neck, intertrochanter and trochanter( P 〈 0. 0001 ). Conclusion: Weight is the significant anthropometrie indice affecting BMD in healthy young women in Nanehang region.
