OBJECTIVE To investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of 18α-, 18β-glycyrrhizie acids(GL) and their different proportions, and select the optimum formulation. METHODS Anti-inflammatory effect of GL were carried through acute inflammatory models: ear swelling induced by dimethylbenzene in mice, paw edema induced by carrageen glue in rats and hepatic inflammation induced by carbon tetrachloride in rots, the anti-inflammatory effects were evaluated by swelling degree and interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression in serum. RESULTS The 3:7 proportion of 18α- and 18β - GL showed anti-inflammatory action on ear swelling in miee; when the proportion were 5:5,4:6 and 3:7, the paw edema could be significantly inhibited compared to the control; GL all increased the content of IL- 6 after hepatic injury, especially 18β-GL and proportions of 4:6 and 3:7. CONCLUSION The anti-inflammatory effects of 18α- and 18β-GL were different, and the anti-inflammatory activity of their proportions changed with the ratio. The proportion of 4:6 and 3:7 were more potent, and had the potential to be developed into new products.
