Objective To study the level of plantar pressure and knowledge of foot protection in community diabetic patients, and to explore its relationship for providing information for nursing intervention. Methods A total of 319 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from 2 communities in Shanghai were studied by using Footscan system to measure their plantar pressure and a self-designed questionnaire to explore their knowledge of foot protection. Resnlts Strictly, 86.83 % diabetic patients had abnormal plantar pressure of left foot, and that of right foot was 89.34% . The mean score of knowledge of foot protection was 21.33±3.21, only 35. 11% diabetic patients knew reducing plantar pressure could prevent diabetic foot, and 28.21% diabetic patients knew methods of dealing with callus correctly. Indicators of plantar pressure such as impulse, max force, peak pressure were negatively correlated with the score of knowledge of foot proteetion(P〈0.05, P〈0.01). Conclusion Many diabetic patients suffer from abnormal plantar pressure and they lack of knowledge of foot protection. Nursing interventions such as health education should be given to them to reduce plantar pressure, and then prevent diabetic foot.
