Objective: To explore the feasibility of developing non-traumatic avascular necrosis of femoral head (ANFH) by improved liquid nitrogen freezing method, and to find a better way to establish the model of ANFH. Methods: Twenty New Zealand white rabbit models of ANFH were established by improved liquid nitrogen frozen method. The rabbits were examined through gross observation, MRI, X-ray film, and Masson staining at the end of the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th weeks post operation respectively. Results: Models of the femoral head had no significant changes during the first two weeks post-operation; the surface cartilage of the femoral head degenerated and the subchondral bone showed necrosis partly after four weeks; the surface femoral head cartilage was partly stripped and the subehondral bone necrosis was severe after six weeks; the majority of femoral head became necrosis and the subchondral bone was even collapsed after eight weeks. Conclusion: The rabbit models of ANFH are established successfully by modified method of liquid nitrogen freezing, the images and histological changes are more consistent with the early and mid-term changes in femoral head. The method is simple and inexpensive, the necrosis appears early and the successful rate is high.
