The tendency of critics in general to denounce Carlyle's views on"hero" leaves much to deplore. A close examination of his works concerned and their conext reveals that he called for heroes because he lived in a mechanical age. No matter what sort of people he conceived as heroes, the point of departure which leads to his appeal for heroes and his attacks upon the malpractice of his times is replete with positive significance. Even if we are concerned merely with his views on "hero" in themselves, we can find much that is positively significant. The "hero" as conceived by Carlyle is by no means a simple notion of social status.Whether one is heroic or not, according to Carlyle.depends primarily on his sincerity rather than his soeial status. In other words, heroes can be found among ordinary people. Such thinking is seen not only in his theoretical works but also in his creative writing.
