摘 要:This paper discusses the features and functions of Discourse Marker (DM), focusing on their contribution to conversational coherence in the ongoing discourse. It is believed that coherence is a joint work by the speaker and hearer in conversational discourse, and that both of them cooperate to negotiate the meaning in discourse. Discourse Markers mainly function as organizational ties in speech production and as suggestive clues for the interpretation of the messages. The Discourse Marker "well" frequently appears in English conversations, and it has multiple functions in different speech events, which results in more-than-one equivalent Discourse Markers in Chinese. The specific function of Discourse Marker is context-dependant and coherence-oriented.
