摘　　要：托马斯·哈代(1840-1928)作为小说家在英国文学史上的地位是独一无二的。他的创作描写了世纪之交英国农村出现的经济、政治、道德、风俗等方面的剧烈变化,从资本主义因素的渗入,从宇宙、生命、制度的永恒矛盾关系来探求这种变化的成因。充满批判意识、宿命论和悲剧色彩是哈代作品的魅力所在。试探究哈代作品中宿命论和悲剧色彩的原因。Thomas Hardy （ 1840 - 1928） is unique as a novelist in the history of English literature. His works depict the great changes in economy, politics, morals and customs of British countryside at the turn of the century, and explore the causes of these changes from the infiltration of capitalist elements, from the eternal conflict of the universe, the life and the system. The glamour of Hardy＇ s works lies in the critical consciousness, fatalism and tragedy. This thesis represents his glamour and probes into the causes of fatalism and tragedy in his works.
