摘　　要：杰伊·帕里尼的近著《诗为何重要》是为诗所做的新的辩护,他所关注的已经不是柏拉图对诗人的驱逐,而是当代世界中诗的处境。他的辩护可以从诗、诗人、世界、读者四个方面去把握,分别探讨了诗的语言、隐喻、形式等要素,诗人个人的声音、传统与独创,诗与政治、自然的关系,以及读者读诗的过程。作者的语言意识强,善于挖掘词源,做出令人耳目一新的解读。他有新批评派的师承,又吸收各家文论之长,解读诗歌游刃有余,精彩纷呈。本书视野开阔,着眼现实,面向读者,用精到的分析、晓畅的语言雄辩地说明了:诗依然重要。Jay Parini's Why Poetry Matters is a new defense of poetry,which pays less attention to Plato's announcement to keep poetry out of the ideal republic than to the condition of poetry in our world.This defense can be understood from four aspects,namely,poetry,poets,world,and reader,in relation to which it explores issues such as language,metaphor,poetic form,the poet's personal voice,tradition and originality,the relation between poetry and politics and natural world,and the process of reading.The author is sensitive to language and good at excavating original meanings of words so as to explain them from new angles.He inherits the methodology of New Criticism and adopts useful ideas from different schools,thus interpreting poems with ease and richness.This book is open-minded,down-to-earth,and reader-oriented,proving that poetry still matters with accurate analyses and eloquent discourses.
