The microorganism co-metabolism was an important mode for biodegrading the refractory organics in wastewater. The processes of butyl xanthate biodegradation with and without the existence of co-metabolism substrates were studied and compared. The experimental results showed that the presence of co-metabolism substrates significantly increased xanthate degradation. The degradation rate of butyl xantbate was 43.1% after shaking culture for 72 h at 25 ℃ with butyl xanthate as the sote source of carbon and energy. While the presence of additional carbon source such as glucose, sucrose and amylum (0.20 g/L) increased the degradation rate of butyl xanthate to 65.2%, 59.4% ,56.4% under the same biodegradation condition, and the coexistence of nitrogen source (peptone) and carbon source (glucose) increased the butyl xanthate degradation to 73.5%. The variation of intermediates products during butyl xanthate biodegradation were detected, with help of which the biodegradation pathway of butyl xanthate was analyzed. The co-metabolism shortened adaptation stage of microbial from original of 36 h to 24 h,so the co-metabolism might be one of the effective ways to improve the biodegradability of butyl xanthate.
