Bone is Chinese American writer Fae Myenne Ng's maiden literary work published in 1991, which soon after its publication brought about the nomination for the William Faulkner Prize for novels and the inclusion in Pushcart Anthology. Ever since that, this novel has attracted the attention of critics and readers and been widely acclaimed in literary criticism. In a combinative analysis of its unique narrative structure and multi-faceted thematic concerns, this paper emphatically reveals that via its cobweb-like narration and dominant "bone" image, the novel expresses its multi-faceted thematic concerns in representing the Chinese American's individual, family and ethnic histories: subverting and interrogating American orthodox history, questioning and critiquing the racial discrimination policies and reflecting the second-generation Chinese American's value orientations in their cultural identification.
