In order to elucidate deeply and systematically the toxicity and tolerance mechanisms of Ginkgo to heavy metals stress, the micro-distribution analysis of the across sections of Ginkgo root with X-ray microanalysis was studied under cadmium and lead stress. The micro-distribution analysis of the across sections of Ginkgo root with X-ray microanalysis indicated that ion micro-distribution of root was significantly affected by cadmium and lead single and combined pollution.Cd^2+ and Pb^2+ accumulation in the epidermis, cortex, phloem and xylem cell of Ginkgo roots was observed. The disrupted balances of most elements of different tissues were one of the pivotal toxicity mechanisms by cadmium and lead stress.Meanwhile the peaks of Ca^2+ and K^+ appeared obviously in different tissues. The maintenance of homeostasis of Ca^2+ and K^+ revealed that Ginkgo had strong resistance against cadmium and lead stress.
