摘　　要：The motif of revenge has been of constant charm to writers all over the world. In the novels of American Renaissance, many writers concentrated their attention on this motif and made a deep probe into it. Among them three brilliant story tellers - Melville, Hawthorne and Poe explored the motif of revenge with fantastic and thrilling stories. Meanwhile they revealed to their readers their understanding of revenge. The result of these stories seems to tell us that revenge, whatever the reason is, will inevitably bring disaster and tragedy upon the avenged and the avenger as well.The motif of revenge has been of constant charm to writers all over the world.
