Objective To explore the effect of raising the affected limb extraordinarily high and quantifying functional exercise on postop limb swelling in traumatic osteopathic patients. Methods Eighty-seven fracture patients were divided based on the oven and odd numbers of their date of admission into two groups: the control group (n = 42) and the experiment group (n = 45). Conventional care was used in the two groups. In the control group, patients' affected limb were raised to 200-30° or to the heart level, and functional exercise such as joint flexion and extension was performed. In the experiment group, patients' limbs were raised extraordinarily high to 70-80°, and quantified functional exercise and limb massage were performed. Results The perimeter of the 2nd dactylopodite of the index finger, middle and ring finger of the affected limb of the patients in the experiment group, compared with these of control group, weren't statistically different between the two groups on the first day after operation (P 〉 0.05), but there were statistically significant difference on the seventh day after operation (P 〈 0.01 ). Conclusion Raising limb extraordinarily high to 70-80° and performing quantified functional exercise can promote venous returning successfully and reduce the degree of postoperative swelling of the affected limb.
