Four natural isolates of Oncomelania snail, field collected from 13 counties of Fujian, Hubei, Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces in the mainland of China were studied in the aspects of esterase(EST) isoenzyme and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) isoenzyme by slab polyacrylamida gel electrophoresis. 10-14 enzyme bands were separated on EST. 3-4 enzyme bands were separated on MDH. The characteristic of isoenzyme patterns was comparated carefully. The results showed that: 1. The isoenzyme patterns were very resemblance in different regions of same province, it revealed that sibling relationship existed in these regions. 2. The characteristic of isoenzyme patterns was similar between smails of Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, but it showed obvious difference with snails of Fujian and Hubei Provinces. 3. Four natural populations of snail might be classified into three geographical strains according to the isoenzyme patterns, i.e. Fujian, Hubei and Yunnan Sichuan. 3 enzyme bands on EST and one on MDH were completely identical among three geographical strains, but other enzyme bands appeared apparent difference at number of enzyme bands, enzyme activity and Rf values. These results showed that the genetic variation existed among three strains.
