美国东亚冷战舆论中的孔子——以1949—1972年间的美国主要报纸为例

摘　　要：冷战期间美国在东亚面临的对手具有两千多年的儒家文化传统,因此,关于孔子作用的思考时常见诸美国报端。孔子从一个备受美国媒体冷嘲热讽的历史人物,一跃成为能够化解东亚共产主义凌厉攻势的冷战利器。这是国际政治在文化传统上的投影。虽然反共舆论并不等于美国的反共政策,但我们由此可以看出那一时期美国国内有着浓厚的冷战氛围,以及以孔子为代表的文化符号在异域和异质语境下发生意义转变的普遍现象。Given the 2000-plus years of Confucian tradition enjoyed by America's ideological enemies in East Asia,the role of Confucius had been allotted a high premium in American Cold War propaganda.In the process,Confucius underwent a metamorphosis of status from being a much ridiculed historical figure to a Cold War weapon in American campaign against East Asian communism.Cultural tradition became a mirror for international politics.Though propaganda cannot be equaled to American anti-communist policies,we can still detect a heavy Cold War atmosphere in the United States as well as the transformative mechanism of Confucius-like cultural symbols in exotic or hostile contexts.
