摘　　要：《美国梦》故事围绕家庭琐事展开,角色设计主要集中在一家三代人。爱德华.阿尔比对剧中的角色设计独具匠心,几乎所有的角色都被赋予了象征意义。在细读文本的基础上,通过对《美国梦》中角色的分析,可揭示出角色背后所折射的各种家庭和社会问题:爸爸和妈妈的关系象征了美国家庭的扭曲,姥姥的生存状态象征着美国社会对老人的抛弃与漠视,年轻人则象征着美国梦的虚伪与颓废,以及美国社会对年轻的狂热。The American Dream,focused on the family life,depicts three generations of a family.Edward Albee,a great character designer,embodies all the characters with a symbolic meaning.This paper,based on a close-reading of the play and an analysis of the characters,explores the symbolic meaning behind the characters.Daddy and Mommy symbolize the deterioration of American family;Gramma represents the old generation deserted by society,and the young man stands for the vanity and degradation of the American dream and the craziness American have for the young.
