Objective:In order to investigate the chemical nerve basis for regulating the stomach functions by electric stimulation to the intercostal nerves. Methods: Retrograde fluorescent double tracing combining with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase(NADPH d) histochemical and CGRP immunohistochemical method were used to investigate whether the spinal ganglia cells with dichotomizing peripheral processes to the intercostal nerves and stomach contain nitric oxide(NO) or NO and calcitonin gene related peptide(CGRP). Results: 21.6% and 11.8% of the spinal ganglia cells with dichotomizing peripheral processes to both the intercostal nerves and stomach were NADPH d and NADPH d/CGRP positive respectively, and 47.9% of the stomach afferent spinal ganglia cells were NADPH d/CGRP positive. Conclusion: NO exists or colocalizes with CGRP in the spinal ganglia cells with dichotomizing peripheral processes to both the somato visceral structures, NO and CGRP are also co located in visceral afferent spinal ganglia cells in rats.
