Objective: To explore the influence of social comparison on pain tolerance and the used frequency of pain coping strategies. Methods : 113 female university students were randomly divided into the upward group ( n = 39) , the control group ( n = 37 ) and the downward group ( n = 37 ). The eold-pressor test (CPT) was performed twice in all participants. After that, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of pain intensity and the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ) were completed. Before the second CPT, social comparison was carried out in upward and downward groups. Results: After social comparison, pain tolerance was significantly increased in upward and downward groups. The frequency of positive cognitive strategies (diverting , self encourages, ignoring) used in upward group was much higher compared with control group. While catastrophic scores in downward group were much lower than those control group. However, pain intensity difference among the groups did not exist. Conclusions: The findings demon- strate that the upward comparison can improve pain tolerance through more frequent use of positive cognitive strategies, and the downward comparison also can improve pain tolerance, but through reducing the frequency of the negative cognitive strategies. Thus, the pain tolerance is affected by multiple factors.
