The novels by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Mrs. Gaskell and George Eliot are characterized by their unique feminine consciousness and keen realistic insight. Thus they occupy an important position in British literary history. The above-mentioned women writers distinguish themselves from their male counterparts in that they write from a keen feminine visual angle, which male novelists often fail to do. Their multilayered representations of feminine consciousness in the Victorian cultural context form a narrative line in their major novels.
